The TSB is a programme that brings together teenage scam-checkers from around India.

Come, join a ground-breaking scam literacy project for teens by BOOM, an independent fact-checking outlet in India. We are hiring 15 teenagers for 3 months, starting in November, for the Teen Scam Busters (TSB). This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Applicants don't need to have prerequisite knowledge of scam literacy or verification.

For this role, we are looking for middle and high school students interested in reporting on prevalent scams and viral misinformation to help us create media literacy in the form of text stories and social media videos.

BOOM has conducted a similar project before called Teen Fact-Checking Network India. Started in 2023, in a partnership with MediaWise based out of the USA, BOOM was the first Indian organisation to launch this one-of-a-kind online programme spanning four to five months. We've since completed three seasons—two in English and one in Hindi and Bengali. Over the past three years, we have received over 300 applications from across India, selecting and training 38 students who have produced more than 55 videos.

What Will You Learn?

Develop essential skills in scam detection, content creation, and digital literacy through hands-on training and real-world projects.

Spotting & Verifying Scams

Learn how to identify and verify online scams to make teenagers aware of scam literacy and educate them on how to consume online information safely. Help us make the internet a safer place.

Record & Produce Content

Selected teenagers will get to record and produce engaging reels, publish articles on BOOM's website, and create compelling content for social media platforms.

Research & Create Scripts

Teen scam-checkers will pitch potential online scams they discover on social media, research and write scripts, gather production elements, and record reels for BOOM's social media channels.

Learn Fundamentals

You will be taught the fundamentals of scam literacy, verification, media literacy, internet safety, and research before working on scam-checks. We'll also provide a basic video production course.

What is the duration of the programme?

This project will begin in November 2025 and continue for a period of 3 months. Teen Scam Busters are expected to pitch scam awareness stories weekly and produce a minimum of two videos or text stories a month. Students are also expected to participate in biweekly virtual learning sessions.

Is it remote or on-site?

This programme is completely remote.

How many candidates will be selected?

We are planning to hire 15 applicants for the project. We will train all applicants on how to check and report on scams and media literacy topics, write video scripts and produce content for social media.

How many hours of engagement can I expect?

We will schedule drop-in sessions each week, keeping in view all academic schedules. We will ensure that your academic schedule and extracurricular activities are not hampered.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

The student will only require a smartphone. BOOM will not be providing any equipment during the course of the programme.
